World Health Organization Sounds Concern Over Severe Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under one in 10 people that would benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its first advice on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to these injectable treatments.

Based on forecasts, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with comprehensive and continuous care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to widespread availability to the jabs that can help people shift significant weight, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even in the present most favorable outlook, the supply of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to expand availability, via strategies including patent sharing.

A patent on semaglutide – the core component of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and enhance satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

Patients commonly start to lose weight after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies suggests users may regain a significant portion after a year of halting the drug, when their usual appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese raises your chance for developing health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.

Excess weight impacts people in countries worldwide and was responsible for 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
