In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
