An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
